Question by Mel Sharples: Need a dinner menu to introduce foreign exchange students to America.?
We are hosting a dinner for four foreign exchange students from Japan, and their host families. Two of them are from rural areas of Japan, and the other two are from big cities. They all have indicated they are anxious to try "real American cooking" (their words).

So what to make? They are 17-18 years old, and there will be kids as young as 12 in the party from the host families - so we need to make some things that will work with all ages. There will be 25 people total.

My first thought was grilling burgers...but I suppose they are used to burgers. How about things like tuna noodle casserole or spaghetti? I know that isn't really American - but they are things we do eat a lot of.

What would you make? One of the families will be bringing over home-made butter pecan ice cream for everyone, so desert is pretty much taken care of.

Best answer:

Answer by Please Order By Number
Having been to Japan I agree with your thoughts on burgers, they are very common and so is spaghetti and red sauce coincidentally. Something with canned tuna in it could go either way. Eating fish, particularly tuna, is very common in Japan so either they may enjoy the similarity or consider it not very American.

Things that I would consider "American" and not as common in Japan would be:
-Roasted Turkey (more particularly the whole Thanksgiving meal)
-Dishes high in dairy (like Mac-n-cheese)
-Ham

Hope this helps

What do you think? Answer below!
